Refined concept plans for a major enhancement of Albury’s riverside precinct will go on public display, after councillors last night endorsed the upgraded designs for exhibition.

The designs depict the vision to revolutionise the foreshore in the Hovell Tree Park area, with riverside boardwalks, viewing decks, landscaping, tables, shelters, and picnic areas.

These latest designs have been refined drawing on community feedback received when the riverside proposal was first put to the public in a ‘have a say’ process that attracted more than 560 responses.

New generations of locals and visitors will learn more about our region’s ground-breaking work in waste management when AlburyCity’s new education centre is completed.

Construction has started on the new building at the Albury Waste Management Centre (AWMC) and it’s expected to be ready to use in July.

It will create a dedicated space for waste and recycling education to take place, catering to all age groups, including school children.

The works, which mark the final stage in the Monument beautification project, include new kerbs, drainage and asphalt.

Although the area is under traffic control, visitors will be allowed into the site if they wish to enter.

However, if there is no pressing need to visit, drivers are asked to delay their visit to allow the works to proceed as quickly as possible.

The site will remain fully accessible to vehicles after hours.

Thank you for your co-operation as the work continues.

The SMART centre (sustainable management and resource training) is a dedicated space for waste and recycling education, catering to all age groups, including school children.

It will also allow Halve Waste education officers to be based at the AWMC, which is leading the way as the region works toward reducing the amount of waste we bury in landfill by half.

Workshops and other activities will be held at the centre to increase the community’s knowledge of waste diversion activities, with a focus on the best ways to reuse and recycle.

The redevelopment of the Elizabeth Mitchell Drive/Thurgoona Drive intersection will see the replacement of the existing roundabout with a new signalised intersection with left-turn slip lanes on the Thurgoona Drive approaches to the intersection, which will improve traffic flow.

The design allows for future duplication of all four roads leading into the intersection so that traffic capacity can continue to improve as demand grows.

The trial will involve the use of sensors buried beneath the pavement in 167 high-demand parking spaces in sections of Olive, Dean and Kiewa streets.

The solar-powered sensors will detect when motorists have overstayed their parking time and will send a message to council rangers who will then investigate.

As an added benefit to shoppers, the sensors will also provide motorists with real-time information about parking availability in the trial area, via a community engagement app.

The new ovens are complemented by shelters, seating, mains power, a drinking fountain and a small garden. A grill has also been added to provide enhanced cooking opportunities for the community.

To launch the new ovens, students from St Patrick’s Parish School will enjoy a pizza feast on site this week.

COVID-safe regulations will be in place.

The inaugural cook-up will be followed by a series of baking days, where the community will be invited to bring along food to cook with that unique wood-fired flavour. The dates and times will be confirmed soon.
