Boost for Lavington as road project continues

By admin9bKp8, 8 May, 2026

Contractors are working on the section of Wagga Road between Kaylock Road and Barlow Street to deliver improvements that will include:

  • Tree planting and landscaping on the road edges to create an avenue effect
  • A new road surface over the existing surface
  • New central medians containing trees consistent with those planted in stage 1
  • A landscaped service lane median between McDonald Road and Barlow Street
  • A new pedestrian refuge between Dick Road and Barlow Street
  • More parking spaces in the McDonald Road and Barlow Street area
  • Kerb and guttering works
  • New drainage pipework and pits

The project is part of a master plan to breathe new life into Lavington’s CBD by making it more visually appealing as well as providing infrastructure to encourage more shoppers to trade with businesses in the precinct.

AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said the works would deliver a boost to the local retail sector.

“We’re not only making the precinct look better, we’re also improving parking and pedestrian access to make it easier and more appealing for shoppers to buy from local businesses,” he said.

“We hope it will help to create investment and job opportunities, while also reducing the business vacancy rate in the area.”

The NSW Government has provided $2M towards the $4.5M cost of stage 2, with AlburyCity providing the balance.

The Member for Albury, Justin Clancy, said the government was delighted to have supported the project though the Regional Growth Fund’s Growing Local Economies program.

“As one of our major shopping precincts, the Lavington CBD has lots of potential for growth and by helping to make the area more appealing and ‘shopper-friendly’, we hope to provide a springboard for that growth,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the works progress and working with the community to make the most of the new-look for Lavington.”

The start of stage 2 works follows extensive consultation with local business owners.

Stage 1 of the project, which also included tree-planting, landscaping and significant roadworks, was completed in 2016.
