Residents of Albury are being challenged to remove ugly graffiti and stop it coming back.

Graffiti vandalism costs the NSW community over $300 million each year. Since the event started in 2012 volunteers have removed more than 141,000sqm of graffiti, saving the community $10.4 million state wide.

Up to 3,000 volunteers from various groups including Rotary, Scouts NSW, Girl Guides NSW and ACT, Air Force Cadets, PCYC, NSW Police, Lions, Church groups, High Schools and more than 80 Councils are expected to remove graffiti from over 600 sites across NSW on Sunday 27 October.

The infrastructure funding will expedite the delivery of important road improvements to service the NEXUS industrial hub at Ettamogah, including the development of south-facing on and off ramps at the Davey Road-Hume Freeway overpass, and a new roundabout at the intersection of Wagga and Davey Roads.

With funds already committed by the NSW State Government for half of the $15.8 million project cost, the announcement today from the Federal Government will see a full diamond interchange at Davey Road become a reality.

Member for Albury Justin Clancy today announced that work has now begun on the critical infrastructure required to make Albury’s new Nexus Industrial Precinct a reality with a major tender now awarded.

Mr. Clancy, who attended the site to turn the first sod today, said local company Longford Civil will undertake sewer augmentation works, an important step in preparing the 450-hectare site at Ettamogah to become a major manufacturing, transport and logistics hub for the region.

The Member for Albury, Justin Clancy, congratulated council on reaching the important milestone, which will see approximately 1km of streetscape upgraded along Wagga Road, between Kaylock Road and Barlow Street.

“The upgrades are an important step in supporting Lavington business by bringing customers back to the area,” Mr Clancy said.

“Parking will be improved and it will be easier for pedestrians to cross the road to visit shops and businesses, while landscaping and tree planting will improve the area’s appearance.

The AEC centre will replace a similar operation at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre which helped more than 250 people over the weekend.

People in need of help can call into the Elizabeth Room at the AEC between 9 am and 5 pm for food, water, advice on accommodation options or general support.

Registration facilities will also be provided so that travellers can be sure their loved ones will be advised that they’re safe.

Meanwhile, AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack has thanked the border community for its generosity and strength of spirit as the crisis continues.

The Dawn Service will be broadcast at 6 am, and at 10 am, another service will be broadcast.

Both services will include community members. The 10 am service will be longer and will include the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems as well as I am Australian.

The MC will be Nigel Horne, while Father Alan Kelb, singer Dianne McKie, piper Roger Buck and guest speaker Colonel Bradley Robinson will also have parts in the service.

Trinity Anglican College boys and girls captains will also record their parts for the 10 am service.

AlburyCity’s new Youth Council has elected its leadership team via a Zoom meeting.

Our 2020 Youth Mayor is Eli Davern, 16, of Xavier High School and the Deputy Youth Mayor is 14-year-old Jack Kelso of Albury High School.

They’ll lead the 14-member Youth Council on a range of projects in 2020, including the staging of a youth forum, supporting the Winter Solstice event and helping to clean up the city by driving graffiti removal programs.

The future of health care in the region has been given a boost, with three local medical students receiving scholarships from AlburyCity.

Joseph Burton, Madhulikaa Sarjapuram and Sanjna Kumar will each receive $3,500 to help with their studies at the University of NSW in Sydney.

They’ll conduct part of their studies at the UNSW Clinical School in Albury.

The scholarships are designed to encourage young medicos to return to Albury Wodonga to practice when they graduate.
